As part of the provincial COVID-19 pandemic response and surveillance at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), the British Columbia COVID-19 Cohort (BCC19C) was established as a collaboration between the BCCDC, PHSA and the BC Ministry of Health (MoH). The main purpose of the BCC19C is to support surveillance and other emerging questions related to COVID-19.

The Cohort includes all individuals who have been tested for COVID-19 at a BC Public Health Laboratory in British Columbia, Canada. The surveillance platform integrates various datasets including daily data updates on BC-wide COVID-19 laboratory test, COVID-19 case data, COVID-19 vaccination data, HealthLink 811 calls, emergency room visits, prescription drug dispensations, medical visits, ambulance dispatches, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions, Chronic Disease Registry, hospital admissions, the provincial client roster and mortality. Additional population level data aggregated at postal code or census dissemination area has also been included from Census data (neighbourhood-level socio-economic status and marginalization, population density, housing conditions). Several research projects have been initiated from the Cohort.

Results from these studies have been presented to public health leaders and helped to inform provincial responses including prioritization of COVID-19 vaccine rollout.
